Summary: Ideal choice of walks giving insight into the city
Comment: If your stay is going to be more than just a brief city break, the book Walking Edinburgh would be an ideal choice. It offers city and suburban walks, and provides just enough historical and background information to whet the appetite without overwhelming. The directions are clear and generally easy to follow and the walks do lead you up side alleys and into closes and courts that the normal tourist would tend to walk past unheeding. Out of town suburban walks also give an insight into how the city spread and developed over the past three centuries and there is a handful of walks which take the more intrepid across the Forth into the Kingdom of Fife or along the Lothian coast towards the spectacular castles of Tantallon and Dirleton. The book is, however, just slightly larger in format that the average pocket - unless you're fully equipped in Ramblers' Association standard issue. But given the climatic conditions you might encounter, that might not be a bad thing.
