Customer Rating: Summary: I want to go!!! Comment: I haven't (yet) been to this part of Europe, but now I know where to go, how to beat the crowds and more.
Again, another multi-country extended DVD set of Rick Steves' shows works perfectly. By throwing in not only Portugal but Gibralter and Morocco, Steves shows how you can get a full-fledged Iberian vacation, with sidebars, and do so in a relaxed style.
Customer Rating: Summary: memories Comment: This may not be rated five stars by many, but I've actually been to Spain and Portugal, therefore this video is a great keepsake in memory of alot of the places I visitied. I didn't feel he rushed through the sites just to fit them all into a single dvd. He picked the specialties and made sure to give ample background. I felt it was a great addition to the pictures and memories from my experience abroad.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great DVD Of Spain & Portugal Comment: Five Shows: This DVD contains five complete "Rick Steves' Europe" TV shows on Spain & Portugal, first broadcast from 2000-2005 -- plus bonus outtakes.
Running Time: 2½+ hours.
Join host Rick Steves on a 2½-hour Iberian odyssey through the best of Spain and Portugal in five half-hour "Rick Steves' Europe" TV shows. Starting in Madrid, you'll wander through the lavish Royal Palace, savor great art, and feel the pulse of flamenco. In nearby Toledo and Salamanca, you'll marvel at El Greco's masterpieces and enjoy some night life. To the south, Seville reveals its Moorish roots and tasty tapas, and Arcos treats you to the ultimate whitewashed hilltown experience. To the west, Lisbon's ornate architecture recalls the glory days when Vasco da Gama and Magellan made Portugal a world power. Leaving the city, you'll feel the wind at Cape Sagres, soak in the sun on the Algarve Coast, and taste some salty barnacles.
The Majesty of Madrid: Madrid is studded with riches from its glory days. We tour the lavish Royal Palace, enjoy art-packed museums, and look deep into Picasso's greatest masterpiece. Experiencing Madrid at its fun-loving best, we're mesmerized by flamenco dancers and munch on pigs' ears. Then, for a dose of Spain's dramatic history, we side-trip to El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen.
Highlights of Castile: Toledo and Salamanca: Castile sparkles with Roman Segovia, walled Avila, student-filled Salamanca, and holy Toledo! We marvel at El Greco and ramble Spain's most awe-inspiring medieval walls. Then, just for fun, we drop in on a bachelorette party with local troubadours, slice and savor tasty jamon, and grab a front-row seat to enjoy Europe's most enchanting public square.
Sevilla is where bullfighting is still politically correct and where little girls dream of becoming flamenco dancers. Sevilla has soul - and we feel it in its lacy Moorish palace, massive cathedral, lavish royal tombs, labyrinthine Jewish quarter, and its people-filled streets. After munching tasty tapas, we head south for Andalusia's ultimate whitewashed hilltown, Arcos de la Frontera.
Lisbon and the Algarve: Salty sailors' quarters and wistful Fado singers mix with Lisbon's ornate architecture to recall the glory days when Vasco da Gama and Magellan made Portugal a world power. Then we head for the Algarve coast, where we explore windy and historic Cape Sagres before savoring pristine beaches and arm-wrestling octopi in the sleepy fishing village of Salema.
Portugal's Heartland: Leaving Lisbon for the countryside, we eat barnacles in a salty old fishing town, march with pilgrims on the anniversary of a miracle, ponder the local Romeo and Juliet, sample university life, and rummage through the riches of Portugal's Golden Age.
