Summary: Perfect Guidebook for first time traveler
Comment: I moved to London two years ago, and I had a lot of time on my hands the first year to do sight seeing. I bought Rick Steves' book because I wanted to see what he recommended. Two years later, I've seen just about everything he mentions in passing and then some, and I can say I think he is spot on with his approach. This is a guidebook for people of moderate/limited means and limited time who want to see the major sites. In a city like London, you'll have to pick and choose which things you want to see, and he groups the sites together into easy self-guided walks that maximize what you can see in a day.

There are many lovely things which are left out including one of my personal favorites: Highgate cemetery. Highgate has amazing monuments and architecture with the perfect creepiness of a Victorian graveyard. It's the final resting place of Karl Marx, George Eliot, Herbert Spencer, Douglas Adams, as well as being the place where Bram Stoker wrote much of his book, Dracula. So why would it not be included in Mr. Steves' book? First, because it's not an easy place to find. It would require a tube and bus ride (or tube and long walk up a steep hill). The best bits are only available by guided tours which are not always available. Sometimes you can book ahead and sometimes you cannot. You can waste a lot of time waiting and still not get in for a tour. And lastly, this is a place run as a working cemetery and not a tourist attraction. The very dedicated (all volunteer) staff can be a bit gruff. Having been to Westminster Abbey/St Paul's cathedral/Cabinet War Rooms/Tower of London many times now, I would rate Highgate as one of my top London experiences. I would not, however, skip out on seeing any of those other sites on the HOPE I could catch a good Highgate tour, and this seems to be Mr. Steves' philosophy too.

I've used his books in Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, Ireland and England. The first time I travel to a country, I use his books to get the most out of my time there. If it's your first time to the UK, I highly recommend his book. If you've been around the block a few times, you'll probably be ready for Lonely Planet, Rough Guide or the Michelin guidebook. Oh, and he would tell you that, too.

Summary: Traveling is easier with Rick Steves
Comment: We are going to Scotland for three weeks and now feel a lot more confident with our book showing us places that have been recommended. We used one before in Germany and are definitely sticking with Rick! Thank's for all the great help. Marlene Urso

Summary: Great Britain
Comment: His book was offensive. He had an arrogant condescending tone and pushed his politcal views on the reader. His inability to seperate his personal biases from fact made me doubt all his suggestions. I threw the book away in disgust. I wrote him a letter which he solicited (please let me know what you think of this book) but he did not reply to. I have been much happier with the Lonely Planet. This was a shoddy book.

Summary: spot on!
Comment: Rick Steves' insights and helpful hints are absolutely spot on! This book made my travel so much less confusing and intimidating and a lot more fun too. I'm sure I saved money as well even after considering the cost of the book. I will always grab a Rick Steves' whenever I travel somewhere new.
