Editorial Reviews:

Enjoy this guided tour of Southwest England, a land rich in history and drama. This 45 minute video released in March 2000 is filled with exotic locations, unforgettable images, and well-crafted narration. Not a how-to-do-it travel video, but rather this video treats the history of the area with emphasis on its contrasts and conflicts.

Included in The West Country are visits to Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Avon, Wiltshire, and Dorset counties. No rain and wind here, just sunny days and beautiful countryside. We visit cathedrals, ancient cities, mysterious structures, castles, and treacherous coastlines.

Produced by John Woods and Keith Cash, and narrated by Kevin Pierce.

Summary: The West Country
Comment: The lush photography combined with skillful narration and unobtrusive sound track whet the appetite for a romp through Cornwall and Devon. Having been in Britain I saw scenes of Bath and other places that were familiar, yet I missed so much of southwest England on my trip that this video makes me yearn to return.

Summary: Southwestern England - The Land of Legends
Comment: Southwestern England is a land of legends and this video begins with a map of the famous sites that it will visit. Unfortunately, it does not dwell on the renowned literary aspects of this journey. When it mentions Tintagel it is only to show the outside of the medieval post office and not the famous ruins reputed to be Arthur's birthplace where Uther endangered his throne to lie one night with the beautiful Igraine. That was a big disappointment. It does show the eerie site of Maidens Circle where legend says some maidens dared to dance on the Sabbath and were promptly turned to stone. Land's End is also shown as the last piece of England before New York City. Other places that are mentioned in the video are Thomas Hardy's birthplace and village, as well as, St. George's Mount. This medieval monastery was the twin counterpart to the more famous Mt. St. Michel. The narration minutely covers how the mount can only be accessed from the mainland when the tide is low which is only twice a day. It also explains how religious pilgrims would have come on pilgrimage during the monastery's heyday. Other famous sites that are covered in this very succinct survey are Glastonbury Abbey, Wells Cathedral, and the beautiful city of Bath. Less breadth and more substance would have served this production better. If you are looking for a quick look at some famous sites then this video might be just the thing for you. If on the other hand, you are looking for some depth and detail of the popular landmarks of Southwestern England, you will be disappointed.
