Customer Rating: Summary: Not Practical for Middle Class traveler Comment: I took "this" to London in Feb 07. Totally worthless for it's weight.
Perhaps this would work for the business traveler who can add a day or 2, maybe with their family. Not for the tourist audience in my opinion.
When I had to find new lodging quickly - it only covered expensive properties in the tourist districts. I didn't have $250 a night or a car or even much taxi fare and that seemed to be what they reviewed.
Many of the things I wanted to see weren't even listed. Granted, this was my 2nd visit so I'd already done the A list: tower, buck house, etc. i was there for museums & on a tight budget.
the restraunts were all dress up places and expensive too. Nothing on the level of an Applebee's for when I wanted something more than fast food but could still wear jeans.
i would check this guide, then turn to rhe Rick Steve's to get more my style. Although he can be a bit - optimistic - for those of us with less energy or chutzpah.
I was not a backpacking student - but I was "between jobs" and had to count my nickels.
I do not recommend this book - even though I absolutely SWEAR by Bob Sehlinger's Unofficial WDW / DL. That's why I tried it - i've been a fan of the series for almost 20 years. The writing style did not work for me either.
FYI - there is a decent place next to the noodle place around the corner in the alley behind the Nat'l Gallery that was patient with the odd American - like a TGIFriday's. I liked Cafe Rouge for decent reasonable food - I tried 3 of them. 1 near St. Pauls. (Hey - in Feb,, warm onion soup is just what you need!)
Customer Rating: Summary: Jolly Good Guide Comment: This is an excellent, practical guide without all the fluff that is in many travel books. Very practical for reading before planning the trip and for carrying along during the trip to London.
Customer Rating: Summary: #1 Travel Guide for London!!! Comment: I bought 5 travel guides for London before my trip. They were all excellent guides & I enjoyed reading each of them. This book though was my FAVORITE by a long-shot!!! I read almost the entire book the day I received it, I had to make myself put it down to go to bed. It is full of interesting, useful & sometimes amusing information. My suggestion for anyone traveling to London is if you buy only one guide book that it be this one.
All the guides were helpful in their own way, but the Unofficial Guide was helpful in all ways. It covers every area that you need for your trip. Airlines, weather, hotels, public transportation, children's London, and on and on and on!!! It gives ratings, operating hours, prices, touring tips, etc. Much more information than you can ever imagine.
I could not have planned such a thorough & wonderful trip without this book. Many thanks to Lesley Logan for a fantastic, phenomenonally beneficial book that I also genuinely enjoyed reading!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent Comment: My wife, 3-year old son and I spent six months in London. We took 4 separate city guides with us, but consistently referred to the Unofficial Guide for the base of our information. Not only did we develop confidence in the recommendations (museums, restaurants, parks, transportation, and even medical assistance), we found the book easy to understand and navigate. I thank Lesley Logan and her publisher for an excellent book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Thanks for the great guidebook!! Comment: London turned out to be one of those places that I really enjoyed....and I believe it was made more enjoyable because we had done some research and planning before going. The Unofficial Guide provided information other than the mainstream stuff you read in all the other books. It added interested pieces of information that made even the planning process a pleasant one.
